How to Evaluate School Districts When Relocating

by Adam Zahra

One of the biggest concerns for military families moving with children? Finding the right school. A new PCS move might come with great housing options, but how do you know if the local schools are the right fit for your child? Every military family wants to ensure their kids thrive, no matter where duty takes them—and a good school district can make all the difference.

Start with Ratings—But Don’t Stop There

Websites like GreatSchools.org and Niche.com provide useful metrics like test scores, graduation rates, and parent reviews. But ratings don’t always reflect the full picture. A school might have a lower score yet offer outstanding programs for military kids or special education support.

Talk to The Military Group

Our agents know their local communities—including the schools. Many of us are parents too, and we can share insight into which schools are highly regarded, which are near base, and what the commute is like. We can even help you connect with other military families in the area for firsthand feedback.

Visit (or Virtually Tour) the Schools

If you can, visit the schools in person. Many offer virtual tours or can schedule meetings with school liaisons. Ask about their experience with military families, their support resources, and any programs tailored to transitioning students.

Consider Your Child’s Needs

Every child is different. Your child may thrive in a large school with advanced placement options—or prefer a smaller setting with more one-on-one support. Be honest about what your child needs and ask specific questions to help make the best match.

Relocation doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your child’s education. With the right info and support, you can find a school that’s a great fit for your whole family.
